What does Non-GMO Mean in Food?

Non-GMO refers to food and ingredients that are free from genetically modified organisms. Key points:

  • Non-GMO foods are produced without genetic engineering, synthetic DNA modifications, or recombinant proteins.

  • GMO-free food can include crops, beverages, snacks, and packaged ingredients verified by the Non-GMO Project.

  • Common non-GMO products include soy, corn, rice, and certain fruits, grains, and beverages.

It’s important to note that Non-GMO vs organic are not the same: while organic products are Non-GMO by default, Non-GMO verified products do not have to meet all USDA Organic standards.
