What does it mean to be Organic Certified?

Being Organic Certified means your farm, ranch, or food product has been verified by a USDA-accredited certifier to meet the strict standards set by the National Organic Program (NOP). These standards cover how crops are grown, how livestock are raised, and how food products are handled, processed, and labeled. In short:

  • No synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, or GMOs

  • Animals raised with access to pasture and without antibiotics or added hormones

  • Strict record-keeping requirements to ensure full traceability

The USDA Organic seal signals to consumers that the food was produced with transparency, environmental stewardship, and animal welfare in mind.

USDA Organic vs Regenerative Organic: What’s the difference?

USDA Organic Certification is the foundational standard in the U.S., ensuring food is grown and processed without synthetic chemicals, GMOs, or prohibited practices.

Regenerative Organic Certification (ROC) builds on USDA Organic. It layers in soil health, animal welfare, and social fairness requirements.

All ROC products are organic, but not all organic products are regenerative.

How Does the Organic Certification Process Work?

Organic certification is a verified process that ensures your operation meets all USDA National Organic Program requirements.

It begins when you submit an application that includes your Organic System Plan (OSP), describing your production or handling practices.

From there, a qualified inspector visits your operation to review your records, observe practices, and verify compliance.

After inspection, a certification specialist evaluates your file to confirm all standards are met.

Once approved, you receive your organic certificate, and annual inspections help ensure continued compliance.

Throughout the process, WFCF provides guidance and clear communication to make certification as efficient and straightforward as possible.
